10 Steps to Accurate Colour Printing
If you are keen to establish accurate colour reproduction from your artwork
Follow these ten simple steps to help you achieve colour consistency when working on your digital artwork.
- Buy a good quality monitor. Budget price screens and lap top screens are just not up to the job.
- Calibrate the monitor with a hardware device. Just follow the instructions that come on the accompanying CD.
- Do not place your monitor near a window, especially one that faces West or South.
- Use controlled lighting at a low level in your workroom. Ideally the decor should be a mid grey.
- Use a calibrated light source to view your prints with when checking them against your monitor.
- Do not wear bright clothing (e.g. a red top will reflect back on to the screen).
- Do not work for long periods without proper screen breaks - your eyes are the most unreliable part of the chain!
- Consider getting an eye test to make sure that you do not have defective colour vision.
- Buy Photoshop and learn how to use it, particularly the soft proof facility. Adjustments to files in terms of density, contrast and colour can be made using imaging software, such as Photoshop. Test prints or proofs will need to be printed during this process. Once a satisfactory result has been achieved, the file can be archived.
- Get training. If you are serious about achieving consistent and predictable results, you need training. Get training sooner rather than later. You know it makes sense!
Screen Check
For those whose only concern is to ensure that what they see on their screen will be reasonably close to what they have printed, then use our screen check to give you some reassurance that the monitor you use is close to aim or not.
