Scanning and Proofing

When you have sold your orginal artwork, you the creator of that artwork continue to own copyright in the work, which means you can continue to reproduce prints of the artwork. Remember that when you sell an original, the new owner does not own the right to reproduce the work. However, even if you own copyright in an image, the new owner to whom you have sold your original is under no obligation to allow you access to photograph it – assuming that you are even able to locate the owner.

Scanning

Some self publishing artists now never sell their original artwork, instead opting to market either open or limited edition giclee prints made from a scan of the original. This not only adds value, but increases the exposure of their work.

To create the best fine art giclee prints requires a very high quality digital file to be made from your original artwork. We use a large format camera with a digital back to create this digital file from your artwork.

The important point to remember is to obtain a good quality scan of your original artwork before you sell it.

Proof Prints

Once the scan from your original artwork is made, we will then produce two 178mm x 127mm proof prints on the fine art media of your choice, for your approval.

  1. One proof print is a scaled down version of the whole composition so that you can check the overall colour.
  2. The other proof print is a section of your image printed at 100% of the desired print size so that you can inspect the detail.

One of the big advantages of giclee printing is that you can print on demand, even just one print at a time, allowing you to order prints as they are sold. You don’t have unsold prints to store, and you also have the option to print your work at different sizes and on different paper types, with ease.

The resulting RAW digital image file has a wide dynamic range or colour gamut, which is important for good colour fidelity to the original.
